How I Helped My Son Tame His Worry: A Lesson in Emotional Management
As parents, we've all experienced moments when our children are gripped by emotions they don't fully understand. Recently, my son found himself in such a situation, and it turned into a valuable life lesson for both of us.
For the past week and a half, my son had been deeply worried about an incomplete assignment in his English journal. The worry had taken root and was beginning to grow, consuming his energy and focus.
This morning, I decided to have a heart-to-heart conversation with him about this persistent emotion. I explained to him that "worry" is a natural and important emotion when it first arises. It acts as an alert, signaling that something requires our attention. However, if we don’t address it with an appropriate action, worry can spiral out of control, growing larger and more overwhelming. At its worst, unchecked worry drains energy from every other part of life, leaving us feeling paralyzed and anxious.
I encouraged him to take action to resolve the issue, even if the solution seemed simple. In this case, I suggested he borrow a classmate’s journal and copy the missing parts to complete his work. I reassured him that it didn’t matter if the task wasn’t perfect—the key was to address the source of his worry.
By evening, he returned home with a smile. He had completed 90% of the copying and shared how relieved he felt. His mood had shifted, and the weight of worry was finally off his shoulders.
This experience reminded me of an important principle: when we notice worry creeping in, it’s essential to pinpoint its source and take immediate action to address it. Ignoring it only allows it to grow and take control.
Acknowledge the Emotion: Worry is a natural response and serves a purpose. Recognize it without judgment.
Act Promptly: Identify the root cause of the worry and take steps to resolve it as soon as possible.
Respect the Emotion: Instead of suppressing or dismissing worry, use it as a signal to guide your actions.
